It’s Only October – 2020

There’s a new routine in our house for the past 3 weeks. Our son got a new job and I am driving him into San Francisco every morning so that he doesn’t have to take public transit and increase our risk of Covid exposure. I don’t mind it. It is a familiar thing for me to drive the kids somewhere, that’s what mom’s do. This is a typical loop drive, hop on the freeway, hop off the freeway, up a couple of blocks, and then back down a couple of blocks and hop on the freeway again. Sometimes we talk, sometimes we don’t.

I have been keeping my eyes open for new things. Here are a couple I’ve managed to catch, thanks to my son who takes the pictures while I drive:

A Big Dream on the side of the hill
Sunrise over the airport
That same sun coming up over the SF Bay

The City itself is a different world. Our drive takes us through downtown and in front of the city hall. Right now in the area across from city hall there are huge tents set up with voting machines. We see lots of “interesting” people as we go too. Seems like every day I see something I haven’t noticed before. It’s kinda fun.

What’s been happening where you are? Any new routines started? Share!

That’s nice of you to keep your son safe that way. Driving time is a good time to think, too.

Your son is very fortunate to have you as his Mother, Janet. It does make for some great Mother/Son bonding time. Even if it is just being in each other’s presence. And, like you say, you see something new daily. πŸ™‚

I love the time in the car with the kids for the quiet time that we can just talk and for the experience of whatever we may see while driving. Great photos that your son took! You’re an awesome Mom!

I have to admit to just a touch of jealousy of you being within driving distance of San Francisco. My middle son used to live in Berkeley. He moved 6 years ago. I still haven’t forgiven him. Visiting him was my best excuse for flying into SFO πŸ™‚

You know, Laurie, we never really went to the city that often. It is a fascinating place and there is much to see and do. It was fun going to the shows and of course to the ball park!

  8. Oh my, that’s quite a drive! I think you deserve Mom of the Year recognition. Driving in Downtown San Francisco can be a challenge… but, I guess if you take the same route each time, it’s easier.

Early on in the pandemic my wife and I would sometimes take drives into the downtown areas of L.A. and Santa Monica, but we stopped when the protests started. We rarely go far from home these days–not more than 5 miles or so, but when we do drive a little further it’s been down in Orange County and still we don’t get very far from home.

My husband and I used to go to Reno about once a year near our anniversary in May and we went to Boulder Creek, CA for a golf tournament in September but did neither of those things this year. It will be nice when we able to do that again without worrying. Still, saves us some money right now!

Your roundtrip sounds like it’s fun in its own way. I agree, if you pay attention to your surroundings there’s always something to catch your interest. Happy Driving, Mom.

I have always loved driving and because of Covid (I think) there isn’t much traffic. Of all the places he could work in the city, we got lucky. All the traffic spots are going to other sections.

Congrats to your son on his new job. Some of my best memories ever were carting around the kids to somewhere for something or other. LOL. The sometimes we talk, sometimes we don’t is very relatable.

My niece is living in the area. We don’t hear from her much but we know she is living her best life with the interesting people of San Fran. Of course I am not supposed to call the city that as she once told me … “Aunty Jill, that’s just dumb”
