A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Petty

“P” is for Petty, Tom Petty.  I am not sure why but of all of the musicians we have lost in the last few years, his death really hit me.  I cried, which is something I hardly ever do.  I was so sorry that I hadn’t gone to the concerts he did in our area right before he passed.  I thought they were too far away and wasn’t familiar with the venue but in retrospect, I should have made the effort.  He died a month and a half later.  At least we did get to see him twice.

The first time was at Oracle Arena in 2010.  Our eldest daughter came with us.  I was amazed at how many trucks it took to bring all the equipment in.

We had reasonably good seats, although they were off to the side of the stage a bit.  I even joined his fan club so I could get early access and bought a sweatshirt.

I made these layouts a while ago but I still remember some of the things I did.  The musical stamp on this page is a smaller version of the one I used with Daughtry.

The paper is from a collection from Paper Wishes called Hopscotch.

I used the “Say Cheese” stencil that I used with the Frampton pictures.

I used the “Pearls” stencil for this one.

I had a stamp that looked like the circles on the paper so I stamped it in the corners and added some enamel dots.

Here’s the setlist from that show and also a review that was in the paper.  I really love the picture of Tom with his arms outstretched and his back to the crowd.

He was promoting his then new album, Mojo, and some of the songs were really good.  I’m glad he did his standard hits too though.  I “made” this paper myself, using watercolor crayons.  I think it matches pretty well, don’t you?

This is “Running Down a Dream” from the second time we saw him, in San Jose in 2014.  My goal had been to scrapbook those pictures for this post but that’s not happening.

I’m hoping to use tomorrow to get ahead a bit on the rest of the alphabet.  Oh who am I kidding?  10 days left of the A to Z Challenge.  Are we having fun yet?

That picture with him arms outstretched is good – you got a lot of good shots! I saw him in the 90s and I thought it was a great show. I can’t remember who opened, but I remember I REALLY didn’t like it and being so glad when it ended. That’s what I remember most, LOL and I can’t even remember who!

I got some even better ones the second time around but I haven’t scrapped them yet. Usually the opener is a no-name and most of the time I don’t remember them either.

I got to see Tom Petty in Portland a couple of years before he died. Great show…we lost him much too soon.

    Janet,

I love your digital scrapbooking!!! That image of the heart and the flowers on the side, is that a stamp? (I’m NOT big on rubber stamps – I have 100’s) but that is awesome!!!

I have never been able to get into digital scrapbooking, but I love the layouts I see people do. I am a hands on type of person – – maybe one day, I’ll make the change – but for now, I’ll just continue to enjoy looking!

Hi Nancy! This is not digital scrapbooking. All of it is paper, as I am a hands on person too. The heart is a die cut and the black flowers on the side are Dazzles stickers that I colored in. You can’t tell from this post because I made it a while ago but if you look at my earlier alphabets, I show the paper and the process I use to make the layouts. I did a fun one for Heart, “H.” Thanks for stopping by!

Love how you coordinate your themes and photo layouts, Janet! 👍

Tom Petty AND Joe Cocker? I’ve passed on countless concerts because I didn’t care for the opening artist or lineup. You seem to have found all the good combos!

There have been a couple of shows like that. I don’t really take pictures of the opening acts if they are just local fill-ins or bands I’m not keen on. Thanks for stopping by!

Can’t say I was that much of a Tom Petty fan, but I did like his work with The Traveling Wilburys and “Running Down A Dream.”

  12. I’m glad you get to celebrate seeing Petty twice, and that music always lives on. Love that musical stamp. You’re certainly well-equipped to create the perfect pages you want, and I like imagining you creating them, reliving your adventures, and appreciating all the artists.

It really has been fun and so often I am making things with the intention of selling them so I approach these projects totally different. I’m willing to take a few chances and practice new things.

I love how the circles are a repeated thematic element on this page. That musical stamp is cool!

Thanks Joy. I am really stretching things with these layouts sometimes. It is fun to go back and look at pages I made a while ago and get refreshed with ideas for new pages.

I’m a huge fan of Tom Petty. I’m so glad that you got to see him in concert one last time before he passed. There’s not a week that goes by that I don’t listen to at least one of his songs.
